TruckSafe would like to remind operators that the Australian standard (AS 5340:2020) for livestock loading/unloading ramps and forcing pens is now available from Standards Australia.
The standard, first released in November 2020, sets out requirements for loading/unloading ramps and forcing pens to enable safe loading and unloading of livestock from transport vehicles. The standard ensures both the welfare of livestock and the safety of livestock handlers.
The standard was developed over a 12 month period in consultation with industry and provides guidance on the safe design and practices for livestock transporters and agricultural businesses across Australia.
TruckSafe Board Director and Shanahan’s Livestock Transport, Transport Manager says
“This standard is very important for livestock transport businesses. It will ensure less stress on animals, shorter loading and unloading times and reduced risk of injury for drivers, particularly those who work alone” Peter said.
“It compliments TruckSafe Animal Welfare standards for holding, loading and unloading and the requirement for this equipment to be properly designed, constructed and maintained. It is enthusiastically welcomed by TruckSafe and I encourage all livestock transport businesses to take a look at it.”
Copies of the standard can be downloaded electronically from the Standards Australia Website at a cost of $125.00.
